On the Importance of Seed Treatment

Four areas of competence, four years of growing success – but what exactly is SeedGrowth? Here’s what we’ve achieved so far.

When people ask me what Bayer SeedGrowth™ is all about, I simply say seeds and growth. Seeds because it is a fully integrated system for on-seed applications, also called seed treatment, and growth because we’re in this to make seed – and each customer’s business – grow to its full potential.

Let me start by explaining what makes SeedGrowth so special. In fact, if it’s not too much of a cliché, I’d like to bring up a familiar quote by Aristotle: “The whole is more than the sum of its parts.” Truly, this is what it’s all about. Breeders, seed treaters, retailers, agricultural advisers, and farmers get fourfold competence from a single source. We are the only company to offer products to protect, enhance, and grow seeds; equipment to apply those products to the seed; coatings to color seeds and enhance their sticking, handling, and performance properties; and services such as customization, testing, training, advice, and technical support from a global network of 14 Bayer SeedGrowth Centers in 14 countries. And to give you an idea of just how much we’ve grown – we started with only five centers in 2009. Our all-in, holistic view of the seed treatment business enables us to offer our customers comprehensive added value to grow their business. And our integrated global perspective is complemented by our local knowledge of crops, climate, and other country-specific conditions.

One of our major achievements in the past four years has been that our customers have experienced and profited from the full integration of our four areas of competence. This holistic approach is evident in all our customer contacts. We offer competent advice on things like the best equipment for seed treaters and which treatments are best for a seed company’s seeds. In each and every case, our customers benefit from the fourfold package and our comprehensive know-how for every aspect of on-seed applications.

I’m also very proud that we’ve built up an authentic and closely-knit SeedGrowth community over the past four years. This has brought our global network to life and added a new dimension to that well-known phrase “Think global, act local.” SeedGrowth colleagues from all over the world meet regularly to exchange ideas and share experience – to the benefit of all our customers.

Another achievement I’m just as delighted about is that we are able to successfully demonstrate our global marketing and business concept. This is especially evident at events such as the Annual Global Congress of the International Seed Federation (ISF), where the clearly visible and uniform branding of Bayer SeedGrowth has become our eye-catching visual identity.

Last but not least, I’d like to mention two success stories from SeedGrowth customers in Uruguay. Erro and Kilafen are seed treatment companies that have been working with Bayer since 2014 on customizing inoculated seed on a Bayer seed treatment machine. Both customers have been grateful for the service and technical support our specialists have given them in developing new inoculated seed solutions.

Seed-applied technologies are crucial for sustainable agriculture and protecting food production worldwide from the ravaging impact of pests and diseases. By enabling our customers to professionally treat seeds, we are contributing to Bayer’s overriding goal of helping to feed a growing global population. After all – and to quote Aristotle one last time – “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.”
