Sustainable Production Requires Successful Collaborations
A very valuable tool in this regard is Griffith Sustainably Sourced (GSS). This program is Griffith Foods’ strategic sourcing program that targets farm-level integration of the supply chain. It helps growers improve the yields and production of their fields. At the same time, one of its goals is to enable us to better trace raw materials for the purpose of proving sustainable farming practices to our customers. I’m responsible for purchasing sustainable spices and herbs at Griffith Foods – so, naturally, I’m especially proud of the wide variety of GSS programs regarding our herb and spice section.
Creating shared values
But first, who is Griffith Foods? We are a food product development partner that offers its services to food processors, distributors, and retailers as well as restaurants, caterers, and supermarkets. We provide them with products such as seasonings, sauces, and doughs. As a result, millions of people around the world consume goods every day that Griffith Foods assists in creating.
One of our main principles is shared value. In the food industry, I believe it is especially important to focus on doing well by doing good. I want to identify and expand practices that support business growth while also addressing the needs of the growers and the consumers – as well as those of our planet. The way this is meant to work becomes obvious in GSS. For example, our GSS initiative helps growers in India to produce red peppers – a highly used ingredient in our recipes – in a sustainable manner. This year, 140 farmers used integrated pest management (IPM) and a customized spray schedule on more than 280 hectares to manage plant protection products in a more efficient manner and to enable water conservation. Additionally, we implemented farm management software and a solution based on QR codes to track produce during its entire journey through the food chain.
Improving quality and safety
These actions (which we also use in other GSS programs around the globe) are specifically aimed at increasing the quality of the herbs and spices grown. They help farmers manage plant protection residue levels in accordance with maximum residue limit (MRL) guidelines, making them safe and suitable for export markets. And, together with Bayer, we increase not only product safety but also operator safety. Field-based training via the BayG.A.P. Service Program and the right gear enable growers to use plant protection products safely. All these combined measures mean improvement for everybody involved. We can rely on the high quality of our raw materials, growers produce a higher yield in a safe way, and sustainable farming practices protect our planet.
